France Telecom to Buy Amena Stake for $7.7B

An AP newswire article, via Yahoo! News, reports that:

France Telecom SA announced Wednesday that it is buying an 80 percent stake in Amena, Spain's No. 3 mobile-phone operator, for 6.4 billion euros ($7.7 billion).

With the acquisition, France Telecom will become Europe's second-largest provider of mobile phone services, with an extra 9.7 million customers, behind Britain's Vodafone Group.

France Telecom said it will finance the deal, its largest purchase since it bought mobile unit Orange in 2000, with a 3 billion euros ($3.6 billion) capital increase.
