Alexander takes over at NSA

Army Lt. Gen. Keith Alexander starts today as the 16th director of the National Security Agency and chief of the Central Security Service.

Alexander had served as deputy chief of staff/G-2 in the Army, the service’s top intelligence position, since July 2003. At NSA, he replaces Air Force Lt. Gen. Michael Hayden, who left the agency in May to become deputy director of national intelligence.

NSA, based at Fort Meade, Md., directs, coordinates and executes specialized activities to protect government information systems and produce foreign signals intelligence.

Alexander previously served as director for intelligence for the U.S. Central Command, deputy director for intelligence for the Joint Staff and commander of the Army Intelligence and Security Command.
