Austin grid computing firm buys French rival
Dan Zehr writes in The Austin American-Statesman:
United Devices Inc., an Austin developer of software that runs high-powered computing grids, has acquired a French competitor to help its efforts to move into new industries.
The company said Monday it will purchase Paris-based GridXpert, which sells a program that manages multiple grid computing networks from a central location.
United Devices dominates the life sciences and pharmaceutical market for grid computing. It has signed on five of the world's six largest drug makers, which use the grids to simulate large clinical trials or model complex chains of molecules.
GridXpert has focused on applications for the manufacturing and design market, said Carl Claunch, vice president of research at Gartner Inc., so the acquisition "opens a whole market for United Devices."
