Salute: 60th Anniversary of V-J Day

Today (August 15) is the 60th anniversary of V-J Day, or "Victory over Japan" Day, which effectively brings the great World War II to a close.

Let us not forget the more than 400,00 Americans who fought and died in World War II.

At noon on this day in 1945, Japan standard time, Emperor Hirohito's announcement of Japan's acceptance of the terms of the Potsdam Declaration was broadcast to the Japanese people via radio. Earlier the same day, the Japanese government advised the Allies of the surrender by sending a cable to U.S. President Harry S. Truman via the Swiss diplomatic mission in Washington.

American Soldiers, Airmen, Sailors, and Marines: You shall not be forgotten.
