Verizon, Cox both join Multimedia over Coax Alliance (MoCA)

Via Red Herring.

Verizon, the largest telecommunications carrier in the Unites States, and Cox Communications, the third largest cable operator, said on Tuesday they are joining an organization that promotes the coaxial wire installed by cable companies as the predominant medium for home networking.

Verizon will be the first major carrier to lend its name to the Multimedia over Coax Alliance (MoCA), an organization set up to promote the development of specifications for the transport of digital entertainment and information content over in-home coaxial cable.

Cox will be the second major cable operator on MoCA’s roster.

MoCA’s membership includes players from an odd array of disciplines. For one thing it will link Comcast, the largest cable operator in the U.S., with Verizon—two companies that compete fiercely for the communications and entertainment dollar of millions of American households.
