Text messages play role in party tragedy

Thanks to an article over on The Inquirer for the pointer.

Lesli A. Maxwell and Elizabeth Hume write in The Sacramento Bee:

Mark Oates text-messaged the invitations to his 16th birthday party.

With words along the lines of "b-day party at LeFord Way" typed into his cell phone and sent out to about 40 friends, he inadvertently struck a digital spark that would ignite a night of violence.

In less than two hours, the electronic grapevine that is a must-have tool in the teenage social network turned a private birthday party into a sprawling street event with hundreds of kids blocking LeFord Way. Police would say later that students from at least five different high schools showed up.
