H5N1 Update: Bird flu case confirmed in Greece

A Reuters newswire article, via MSNBC, reports that:

Greece said on Monday it had detected one turkey with birdflu on the eastern Aegean island of Chios, becoming the first EU country where the virus has spread to.

“The Centre for Veterinary Institutes has informed us that one of nine poultry samples has tested positive to birdflu (H5) anitbodies,” the agriculture ministry said in a statement.

State-run television quotes authorities as saying first bird flu case has been confirmed in Greece and tests and for the deadly H5N1 strain are pending.

Greek health authorities had been checking several suspect turkeys on the eastern Aegean island of Chios, fearing that the bird flu virus had crossed over from neighbouring Turkey, state TV reported on Monday.
