Verizon Wireless seeks location deadline extension

A Reuters newswire article, via Yahoo! News, reports that:

Verizon Wireless on Monday asked U.S. telecommunications regulators to extend a year-end deadline for 95 percent of its cellphones to be able to pinpoint location and help emergency workers find callers more easily.

Verizon Wireless, a venture of Verizon Communications and Vodafone Group Plc, said in a letter to the Federal Communications Commission that it would need an extra six months to meet the requirement.

The No. 2 U.S. mobile phone company said that about 91 percent of its customers now have phones that would to be able to identify the location of callers to 911 emergency services. It expects about 93 percent of its phones to meet the requirement by year-end, just 2 percent shy of the target.
