Florida got an extra day to prepare for Hurricane Wilma but Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula was told to expect a direct hit Friday, as forecasters on Thursday noted that while the storm had weakened it still packed a massive punch with 145 mph winds.

Much of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula was under a hurricane warning Thursday. The storm, which has been blamed for 13 deaths in the Caribbean, has forced the evacuations of tens of thousands in coastal areas from Honduras to the Florida Keys.

Tourists were ordered to leave the Florida Keys, and everyone was told to evacuate Mexico’s island of Isla Mujeres, near Cancun. Authorities were moving out thousands of others Thursday from low-lying areas in a 600-mile swath covering Cuba, Mexico, Belize, Honduras, Jamaica, Haiti and the Cayman Islands.
