Canada: Manitoba Telecom to Axe 800 Jobs

Catherine McLean writes in The Globe and Mail:

Manitoba Telecom Services Inc. has announced plans to cut up to 800 jobs, or 12 per cent of its work force, in a move observers say will help address its Achilles heel -- the Allstream unit it acquired last year.

About 80 per cent of job cuts will come from Allstream, which goes head-to-head with bigger phone companies across the country in the cut-throat business market. The rest will be within Manitoba. Costs for the work-force reduction will hurt full-year results, MTS said.
