H5N1 Online: Betting on Bird Flu

THIS week, Salon.com examines Intrade, an online "futures market" (well, sort of) that allows members to bet on coming events. The site has accurately predicted election results, the selection of Pope Benedict XVI and the severity of Hurricane Katrina.
Given its track record, the latest contract is enough to give pause: according to the current betting line, there is a 65 percent chance that someone in the United States will contract bird flu by March.
