Australia: Telstra Fiber Plans Spook ISPs

Andrew Colley writes on Australian IT:

Investors are quietly bracing for another round of consolidation in the internet sector amid continuing uncertainty on Telstra's plans for its copper network and wholesale products.

According to brokers and analysts in the telecommunications sector, unlisted mid-sized internet companies have accelerated plans to leave the industry and are moving aggressively to find buyers.

A Melbourne broker, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said this was a result of Telstra's proposal late last year to replace its DSL access multiplexers, and large sections of its copper network, with fibre links.

"Telstra's attitude is just scaring everybody in the market," he said.
