Cable and Phone Firms Clash

Via Red Herring.

While cable operators in the United States continue to aggressively explore the addition of cellular services from Sprint Nextel as part of their service bundles, AT&T and Verizon Communications, owners of the two largest wireless firms, do little more than dabble with cellular/landline bundles.

At the cable industry’s national showcase, the National Cable & Telecommunications Association show currently taking place in Atlanta, four cable operators on Monday announced the start of a pilot program with Sprint Nextel that will add wireless to their voice, video, and data bundles.

The cable operators will also explore a number of integrated cellular/landline features such as the ability for users to program their home digital video recorders from their cell phones, and a single phone that automatically switches back and forth from landline to cellular.
