UK: NTL To Axe 6,000 Jobs

NTL, the cable company that recently merged with rival Telewest, has begun a programme to slash 6,000 jobs.

The redundancies, which will amount to a third of the combined group's workforce, are part of a £250m cost-cutting initiative which is due to be unveiled by Stephen Burch, the new chief executive, at the company's first-quarter results on Tuesday.

Last night a former member of staff who was one of the first victims of the cuts told The Sunday Telegraph: "It's already started. They are starting at the top and working their way down."
