EU to Launch Key Telecom Market Reform

The EU is set to unveil a major reform of the bloc's telecom industry, aiming to tear down national barriers and boost competition in the sector which Brussels argues is "long overdue."

Speaking to a German association Bitkom two days before introducing the proposal on Thursday (29 June), the EU information society commissioner Viviane Reding called on the member states "to prove that they really mean what they say in their Sunday speeches about jobs and growth."

The blueprint - leaked to some German media - includes ideas on how to take advantage of new technology to boost competititon, for example by enforcing a separation of telecoms firms' networks from their services, an idea already tried out in the US.
