Alcatel-Lucent Deal Approved by European Union

A Reuters newswire article, via The New York Times, reports that:

The French communications equipment maker Alcatel has won European Union permission to buy its smaller American rival Lucent Technologies. The deal already had clearance from United States authorities.

Shareholders of Lucent, based in Murray Hill, N.J., will vote on the deal on Sept. 7. Lucent’s chief executive, Patricia F. Russo, would be chief executive of the combined company, based in Paris.
