ACLU Quickly Blasts White House Privacy Panel

The White House Privacy and Civil Liberities Oversight Board's first public hearing started quietly enough Tuesday as the chair and vice chair of the Bush appointed panel explained that their job was to help Americans understand how the government protects their rights and to work behind the scenes to help privacy officers in the government.

But Caroline Fredrickson, the Washington DC ACLU's legislative counsel, quickly changed the tone in Georgetown's historic Gaston Hall by launching into a full-throated attack on the Bush Administration's policies, ranging from warrantless wiretapping to the material witness statute.
