UC Davis Student Records Hacked

Tony Bizjak writes in The Sacramento Bee:

A computer hacker believed to be a University of California, Davis, student broke into the private computer accounts of 168 other students during the past month, university officials disclosed Friday.

Campus police are investigating the computer break-ins, which occurred from a computer connection in a campus residence hall, said Bob Ono, campus technology security coordinator.

Ono said officials are uncertain so far what the hacker did on those accounts after gaining access.

The affected students were notified Friday, the day after officials confirmed the break-in, and were warned that the culprit could have gained access to credit card numbers and information for other financial accounts, as well as online accounts such as eBay and Facebook.
