How much should newspapers give away?

The irony here is striking. Richard Blackwell writes in Tuesday's (April 26, 2005) Globe and Mail:

"The ink-stained wretches of the newspaper business have embraced the Internet as a critical way to reach readers, but they're struggling with a more important challenge: how to ensure their Web products make money. There are few workable models yet, says analyst John Morton of Morton Research Inc. in Silver Spring, Md., and every newspaper is scrambling with the issue. Some are charging users for access to on-line content, while others give it away, and there are many hybrids."
