UK: ID cards scheme is high risk, say academics

The government's national identity card scheme could cost as much as £19.2bn or £230 for every citizen registering for the card, according to research from the London School of Economics (LSE) published today.

The Home Office's plan is for a central population database underpinning a biometric ID card issued to every UK the adult. The legislation needed for the scheme to go ahead faces its first debate in the House of Commons tomorrow afternoon.
