New Zealand capital is a hacker paradise
Nick Farrell writes in The Inquirer:
More than 50 big name companies in New Zealand’s capital city, Wellington, have wide open wi-fi networks.
According to the Dominion Post the unsecured wireless networks are sitting ducks for hackers. Security outfit Aura Software Security, in a publicity stunt, drove a Dominion Post hack through Wellington with the sniffers on. It found 50 corporate networks sitting there completely wide open and others had a very low level of security.
Maarten Kleintjes, head of the Police's e-crime unit, was not particularly impressed. He said that Aura's drive-by sampling of networking walked a fine line that bordered on unauthorised access.
However, he did say that many New Zealand corporations are unaware their wireless networks pose a security risk.
