Tele2 set to acquire Versatel

A combination of AP and Bloomberg News newswire reports converge into this report, which appears in The International Herald Tribune:

The Swedish telecommunications company Tele2 will buy Versatel Telecom International of the Netherlands for 1.34 billion, the companies said Monday.

Tele2 will pay 2.20, or $2.66, per share to Versatel shareholders, 14 percent more than the closing price Friday for Versatel shares. After that transaction is complete, the private equity firm Apax Partners will purchase Versatel's German operations for 565 million.

Versatel, the object of takeover speculation for nearly a year, offers telephone, Internet and television services to one million customers in the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium as well as other services across Europe.
