NYT: Frying spammers: Does it help?
A New York Times article by Tom Zeller Jr, via The International Herald Tribune, reports that:
It seemed a banner week for the anti-spam crusade.
Last Tuesday, Microsoft announced that Scott Richter, whose company in Colorado, OptInRealBig.com, was considered by anti-spam activists to be one of the world's most prolific junk e-mail operations, had agreed to settle a lawsuit with the company for $7 million, though he did not admit to any wrongdoing.
After recouping the company's legal costs, Microsoft executives said, they planned to reinvest $5 million of the settlement to fight spam. Another $1 million will go to New York State, which assisted in the lawsuit, to increase computer access for low-income families.
Then on Wednesday, America Online introduced its second annual "Spammer's Gold Sweepstakes," in which spoils seized in legal settlements with spammers are given away in drawings.
