UK: Pipex to bring VoIP/WiMax to birthplace of Shakespeare

Tony Dennis writes in The Inquirer:

AS PREDICTED, the big guns are looking at WiMax to provide broadband and voice services wirelessly. In this case Airspan has provided UK major league ISP, Pipex, with the gear to test residential services.

The pair have kicked off a six month trial of WiMax in Stratford-upon-Avon, the birthplace of British bard- William Shakespeare. Significantly the partners will be testing two technologies - not only straight ‘voice-over-WiMax’ but also ‘voice-over-Wi-Fi’ whereby the WiMax signal is effectively split into discrete Wi-Fi sessions.

Using WiMax spectrum which Pipex has acquired, the company will deliver broadband services plus VoIP based voice using WiMax equipment supplied by Airspan. Effectively they're using wireless technology to cover the last mile to business and residential premises.

The equipment is actually compliant with the latest 802.16-2004 specs. Triallists will be provided with Airspan's own indoor WiMax modem. Future trials will include WiMax PC Cards and WiMax enabled mobile devices.
