FCC near approval of Verizon deal

Via Reuters.

U.S. federal regulators are nearing approval of two deals that would reshape the telephone industry, the Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday.

They are in negotiations over likely divestitures to preserve competition, especially in the market for corporate customers, the newspaper said.

Citing people familiar with the situation, it said Federal Communications Commission Chairman Kevin Martin is pressing FCC staff to recommend approvals of Verizon Communications Inc.'s $8.5 billion purchase of MCI Inc. and SBC Communications Inc.'s $16 billion takeover of AT&T Corp.

FCC votes on the deals could come as early as the agency's October 12 meeting, the Journal said.
