University drops lawsuit against website

An AP newswire article, via The Globe and Mail, reports that:

An upstate New York college has dropped its lawsuit against an Internet website that school officials said had been allowing harassing postings against faculty and students.

Macreena Doyle, a spokeswoman for St. Lawrence University, said the decision was made after determining the most troubling postings had been removed from the website called, "Take Back Our Campus."

The site frequently posted "serious allegations," including accusations of drug abuse by named students and faculty. At one point, the site kept track of how many times a particular student was seen crying because of what was on the site, Doyle said.

Lawyers for St. Lawrence University, about 150 miles north of Syracuse, in May sought a court order giving the university access to records from Time Warner Cable that could help identify the operators of the site.
