Canada: Rogers assails Bell on lobbying

Bertrand Marotte writes in The Globe and Mail:

Cable and telecom czar Ted Rogers blasted Bell Canada yesterday, accusing it of lobbying hard behind the scenes in Ottawa in order to bend the rules in its favour.

"Bell's entire regulatory policy is to retain their 95-per-cent monopoly share of the local phone companies and to take all actions possible to impoverish the Canadian cable companies," Mr. Rogers said in a speech -- sponsored by Bell -- to the Canadian Club.

Rather than coming up with innovative new products and services like Rogers Communications Inc., Bell "lobbies cabinet to overrule its own regulatory commission and picks sides without public participation," he said.
