NEC to build fiber cable between India and Sri Lanka

Martyn Williams writes in NetworkWorld:

NEC will install an undersea fiber-optic cable between India and Sri Lanka, it said Monday.

The company signed a contract with Sri Lanka Telecom and Bharat Sanchar Nigam to construct the 320-kilometer telecommunications cable, which will be called the Bharat Lanka Cable System.

Installation work is scheduled to be completed by the second quarter of next year and the cable will offer an initial capacity of 40G bit/sec. It will be expandable to 960G bit/sec should demand increase, said NEC.
