Solar eclipse: Moon's shadow moves across Earth

A spectacular solar eclipse in which the moon appeared to take a bite out of the sun took place this morning.

But sadly for astronomy enthusiasts in the UK, the rare event was completely spoiled by thick, grey clouds blocking the view.

The partial eclipse, lasting over an hour, should have been a treat for around a dozen members of the Society for Popular Astronomy who set up telescopes in London's Hyde Park especially for the event.

But they were left cursing their luck as the good old British weather stayed true to form.

"I knew I should have gone to Madrid," said David Arditti, who had been hoping to see the moon block up to 57% of the sun.
