H5N1 News: Bird Flu Confirmed in Russia’s South Region

Tuesday tests have proved that 200 dead swans found in the Volga estuary in the Astrakhan region died of H5 bird flu, Russia’s Agriculture Ministry said, citing the Federal Veterinary and Phytosanitary Control Service.
Astrakhan authorities have launched measures to prevent poultry contracting the virus, Interfax reported.
The dead swans, dicovered 15 to 17 kilometers from the nearest village over the past week are the first cases of bird flu to be registered in the Astrakhan region.
