Via The Austin American-Statesman.

The City of Austin is preparing to offer $3.2 million worth of tax incentives to Hewlett-Packard Corp., which is building a $300 million data center that will create at least 140 jobs.

The City Council will vote Thursday on the 10-year package.

Hewlett-Packard had been considering Austin and four other cities for two centers. According to council documents, the company is considering a second center of similar size in Wells Branch, the municipal utility district north of Austin.

This is a great example of why we need the proposed open government charter amendment. Right now we find out about these tax giveaways days before the up or down vote. The open government amendment would make the information public at the time it's first proposed to the company, when the public actually has a chance to have meaningful input.
