Movie Theater Owners Still Don't Get It: Now They 'May' Ask to Jam Cell Phones

They just still don't get it. (And this didn't help either.)

Message to Hollywood: Make better movies, start treating us better as consumers, and stop ripping us off.

A Reuters newswire article, via Yahoo! News, presents this nifty piece of idiocy:

Movie theater owners faced with falling attendance are considering asking federal authorities for permission to jam cell phone reception in an attempt to stop annoying conversations during films, the head of the industry's trade group said on Tuesday.

Industry leaders at the ShoWest conference for theater owners want to find ways to win back crowds.

What has jamming cell phone reception and movie theatre value for money got to do with each other?

While I agree that the main reason for plummeting movie theatre attendance is the poor value for money of the experience, there is also a real problem (at least in UK) of rude people who talk and play with their electronic gadgets during movies.

Perhaps this is a social problem that cannot be fixed with technology, but I would personally be a lot more willing to pay the average £8 or so it costs to watch a movie here if cell phones didn't work and people who disrupt the movie were thrown out.

So I would support theatres being able to do this, as long as they crack down on other antisocial behaviour by simply throwing people out, too.
