Texas Man Keeps Job, Claims Dementia, Defrauds IRS

Claire Osborn writes in The Austin American-Stateman:

A Driftwood accountant received disability checks for dementia while he worked regular jobs and funneled his pay to shell companies he set up, according to court records.

Then he had the companies pay to build his house, install a swimming pool and buy a car and a boat, the records say.

Stephen Towne Esker, 57, pleaded guilty Monday in U.S. District Court to two counts of filing false tax returns in 2001 and 2002. He could get six years in federal prison and a $2 million fine. His sentencing date has not been set.

He did not report 2001 income of $68,800 or 2002 income of $142,000, court records said.
