Chicago Wi-Fi Plan Advances

Via The Chicago Tribune.

Chicago today invited proposals from the private sector for a high-speed, citywide Internet service that would include free wireless access in schools, parks and major public places.

The aim of the project is "to assure that everyone in our city has the same access to modern, affordable Internet technology," Mayor Richard Daley said.

Speaking at a news conference this morning at a West Side school to announce the request for proposals, Daley said the city wants to partner with a private firm or consortium to offer free or low-cost Internet service to all residents.
