UK to License Wireless Narrowband

A Reuters newswire article, via ExtremeTech, reports that:

Britain plans to license new bands of radio frequencies that could serve as an alternative to fibre optic cable and would allow very high data speeds over short distances, regulator Ofcom said on Wednesday.

The media-to-telecoms regulator said the spectrum—in the 71-76 gigahertz and 81-86 GHZ bands—would allow data speeds of 1 gigabits per second (GBPS) to 10 GBPS over distances of 1-2 kilometres, compared with speeds of between 1 and 24 Mbps available on fibre.

This could be of use to organisations needing very high speed data transfer rates between two points, and will also provide an option to cater for future market demands for increasingly high capacity Internet-based applications.
