University of Texas Gets $50M from Dell Foundation

Jennifer Bordelon writes on News8Austin:

The Michael and Susan Dell Foundation announced a $50 million gift to the University of Texas on Monday.

The funding for the school in Austin will be used for a pediatric research institute, a center for health living and a computer sciences building.

Austin is one of the largest cities in the United States that doesn't have a medical school. The nearest one is in San Antonio.

“Austin is the nation's second largest city without a medical school and biomedical is one of the primary areas of future opportunity in emerging technologies. So this moves us forward in two critical areas," Austin City Council member Brewster McCracken said.

The $38 million pediatric health research institute will be built next to the Dell Children's Medical Center of Central Texas, currently under construction at the old Mueller airport.
