Veterans Data Breach Highlights Need to Strengthen Privacy Laws

The revelation that the Department of Veterans Affairs allowed the personal data of more than 26 million people to fall into the hands of a simple thief sends the clearest message yet that privacy laws must but updated to protect Americans in the digital age.More here.
The Privacy Act of 1974 is poorly enforced and in need of modernization. CDT has called on the administration to update its guidance to agencies on the Privacy Act and Congress to update the law to reflect the state of digital technology. In addition, CDT supports provisions in a data-breach measure sponsored by Sens. Arlen Specter (R-Pa.) and Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) (S.1789) that address the government's use of personal data held in private databases.
