UK: Police Lose Backpack Containing Intelligence Data

Via UPI.

British anti-terror police have been ordered to tighten security after a backpack containing details of bomb plots and suspects was lost in the street.

Police chief Sir Ian Blair has implemented new rules on the carrying of sensitive material after the bag was lost in south-east London. The Guardian newspaper Monday quoted sources as saying the files held important information and that the police were desperate to recover them.

Scotland Yard said: "An internal inquiry has been carried out to ascertain the full circumstances around the loss of documents. We take incidents of this nature very seriously. We have also carried out an urgent review of how sensitive information is handled by officers. A number of changes have been made to ensure we minimize the risk of such incidents in future."

The blunder will only add to the current pressure on police over claims of crucial failures in the run-up to the July 7 bombings in London.
