Christine Hauser writes in The New York Times:

From a memorial site in Pennsylvania to a cathedral on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan, Americans started to gather today on the eve of the fifth anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks to reflect on the thousands of people killed and the changed landscape of their lives and cities.

Most of the 9/11 commemoration events, like story readings, music and recitation of the names of those killed in the attacks, were scheduled for Monday in dozens of locations throughout New York and other states.

But in New York City, where most of the victims of 9/11 were killed, and other sites, the remembrances blossomed early. Firefighters marched in streets to honor fallen comrades, bereaved family members knelt in church ceremonies, and mourners paid homage to the souvenirs of their memories: the photographs, mementoes, and belongings of the dead.
