Ultra Wideband: Too Much Competition?
Andy Dornan writes in Network Magazine:
Ultra Wideband (UWB) has been promoted for years as a very-high-data-rate wireless technology, but so far vendors have been unable to agree on a standard and no products have shipped. That's about to change later this year, when UWB gets built into everything from PDAs to digital cameras. But instead of just one standard, there'll be at least two--meaning that even though your cell phone and laptop may both include UWB, they may not be able to talk to each other.
The IEEE's attempt to develop a UWB standard, known as 802.15.3a, has been deadlocked for about two years, with two rival groups pushing their own proposals.
