JDS Uniphase acquires power-over-fiber company

In an very interesting acquisition move, the EE Times reports:

Optical components and systems supplier JDS Uniphase Corp. has acquired privately held Photonic Power Systems Inc., a provider of photonic power for the delivery of power over fiber, for an undisclosed amount.

JDS Uniphase (San Jose, Calif.) expects the acquisition of Photonic Power Systems (Cupertino, Calif.) to expand market opportunities to deploy photonic power in medical, wireless communications, electrical, industrial sensor, and aerospace applications.

Photonic power is a power delivery system whereby light from a laser source illuminates a highly efficient photovoltaic power converter to produce electrical power. It delivers isolated power that is immune to RF, EMI, high voltage and lightning. Photonic power replaces copper and batteries for remote sensors, coaxial cable in wireless applications, and oil or gas-filled measurement transformers in high voltage applications.
