The Real Reality TV

Daniel Fisher writes in Forbes:

Reality television got a dose of, well, reality earlier this month when a New Jersey judge approved a lawsuit by thousands who claim their privacy was invaded by crews filming a television documentary for NYT Television.

In a ruling that could have a chilling effect on real-life television shows, Monmouth County Superior Court Judge Louis Locascio certified a class action on behalf of 5,000 people who were treated at a New Jersey hospital while the documentary
Trauma: Life in the ER was being filmed in 2001. Fee-hungry lawyers are attempting to mount similar cases on behalf of thousands of patients who went through the emergency rooms of 35 hospitals in other states during the filming of the series. The episodes aired on the Discovery Channel, a private company whose shareholders include Liberty Media.
