Texas Attorney General's sex predator crackdown nets 300th arrest

An AP newswire article by Liz Austin, via The Austin American-Statesman, reports that:

Fugitive and cyber crime units established by the state attorney general's office have arrested their 300th accused child sex predator, Attorney General Greg Abbott said Tuesday.

The units reached that milestone last week following a North Texas sweep that landed 12 people in jail, Abbott said. In all, 303 people have been arrested since the units were launched in 2003.

David Eugene Acosta, the 300th person nabbed by the units, was arrested Aug. 1 in Eagle Pass as he made his way across the international bridge from Mexico. The 20-year-old had been a fugitive since December, after he failed to report to his parole officer regarding his 2000 conviction in Falls County of aggravated sexual assault of a child.

Citing the death of 9-year-old Jessica Lunsford of Florida earlier this year, Abbott said the U.S. is facing a "national nightmare" of convicted sex offenders victimizing children again. John Couey, a convicted sex offender who did not register his new Florida address, has been charged with capital murder, kidnapping and sexual assault in her death.
