New York Attorney General Applies Antitrust To Online Retailing
K.C. Jones writes in TechWeb News:
New York on Tuesday announced an agreement with online Web site operator GSI Global Commerce Inc., marking one of the first times antitrust laws have been applied to Internet retailing in the United States, according to New York State Attorney General Eliot Spitzer.
GSI Global Commerce, which runs Web sites for some of the country's largest sporting goods retailers, will reform its practices to promote competition and prohibit the sharing of price information under an agreement that Spitzer's office disclosed.
GSI operates Web sites and sells merchandise for Modell's, the Sports Authority, G.I. Joe's and other retailers. The sites bear the names of sporting goods stores and appear to belong to separate, competing businesses, but GSI can determine final prices.
Spitzer's office claims that the system could prevent online shoppers from finding discounts available directly through retailers, depriving them of lower, competitive prices.
