Comcast, Cisco, Nortel Form Open Transport Initiative
Via Red Herring.
The usually separate and competitive worlds of cable TV and IP communications moved a lot closer together on Monday with the announcement from Comcast, the largest cable operator in the United States, of its intention to partner with IP leaders Cisco Systems and Nortel Networks on an interoperability initiative.
The cooperation among the leaders of the cable TV and IP networking markets could have repercussions in the slowly evolving entertainment turf war between cable operators and telecommunications carriers.
The three companies will form the Open Transport Initiative (OTI) to accelerate interoperability between optical communications—the core transport technology in the cable world—and IP communications, which is the primary transport protocol in the computer world.
