H5N1 News: Roche Picks Tamiflu Partners

Via Red Herring.

Swiss drug maker Roche said Monday it has narrowed down the list of potential partners for its avian flu treatment Tamiflu to 12 companies and has picked one sublicensee in China, the Shanghai Pharmaceutical Group.

Roche has evaluated 200 companies to help it manufacture Tamiflu and ease concerns about a shortage of the drug as fears spread of a potential pandemic of avian, or bird, flu. Tamiflu so far is the only approved treatment for avian flu.

The Basel, Switzerland-based pharmaceutical maker has been under pressure from the World Health Organization and individual governments to significantly increase Tamiflu supplies or risk losing its patent.
