Why The Registered Traveler Program Can't Solve Watchlist Problems

Ryan Singel writes on 27B Stroke 6:

Business travelers have long clamored for a Registered Traveler program that would speed them through airport screening lines, keep them from being delayed by being picked out for a random patdown for simply booking a flight at the last minute, and save them from being slowed down by being in line with casual travelers who don't know to take off their belts, shoes and jackets.

It's not a simple problem to solve, since you need to find room for the lanes in crowded airport lobbies across the country and if you are the TSA, the last thing you want to happen is allow an unknown terrorist to register, get through screening with a weapon and then hijack a plane. Not only is the outcome horrendous, the media coverage and political fallout would be devastating to the agency.
