New Orleans Data Gets Backup Home in Austin

Mark Lisheron writes in The Austin American-Statesman:

In a first-of-its-kind partnership for major American cities, Austin will be the emergency storage center for the computer programs needed to run the city of New Orleans.

The chief technology officers for both cities hailed the agreement, which provides a database far enough inland to be safe should New Orleans face another storm of the magnitude of Hurricane Katrina.

The plan is expected to save New Orleans millions of dollars because it won't have to build a remote emergency data center or pay a vendor thousands of dollars under a monthly lease. The City of Austin is expected to charge New Orleans a nominal one-time fee of about $5,000, said Pete Collins, Austin's chief information officer.

New Orleans is responsible for the installation and upkeep of the system, Collins said. Austin is charging the city a fee only to comply with a state law that says Collins isn't authorized to give away something of value — the space needed to house the hardware — belonging to the state or a city.
