Stop & Shop Keypad Theft Suspects Ordered Held in Jail

An AP newswire article, via The Boston Globe, reports that:

A federal judge on Tuesday ordered four men accused of running a high-tech scam to steal credit and debit card information from Stop & Shop customers held in jail until their trial.

Arutyun Shatarevyan, 20, Arman Ter-Esayan, 22, Mikael Stepanian, 28, and Gevork Baltadjian, 20, all of the Los Angeles area, are charged with federal aggravated identity theft and conspiracy to fraudulently traffic in access devices. They haven't yet entered pleas.

First arrested last week, each man waived his right Tuesday to protest his imprisonment, although they're allowed to raise the same issue later.

They're accused of removing or trying to remove PIN pads from at least five stores in Rhode Island and one in Seekonk, Mass. and replacing them with nearly identical machines that recorded customers debit and credit card information.
