Texas: Telcos want a "do-over"

Thanks to Chip over on savemuniwireless.org for pointing this out. Those slippery congresscritters will slip anything in the backdoor if you let them...

Claudia Grisales writes in The Austin American-Stateman:

When legislators meet in Austin today, they will be focusing on a single big mission: changing the way Texas pays for schools.

But some see the extra session as a vehicle for tackling other issues that were left unresolved during the regular session, including overhauling Texas' telecommunications law.

That group includes state Rep. Phil King, R–Weatherford, who said he will file legislation as early as this week to lift regulation of basic phone rates and make it easier for big phone companies to get into the television business.

"I don't want to sound too hopeful," King said Monday. But he added: "I think if school finance reform moves along, there is a good chance we can get telecom done, too.
